How To Avoid Weight Loss Plateaus

Weight loss frustrations - When you hit a plateau it is time to go back to the drawing board and do a total evaluation. Are you eating more calories than you think? Should you increase the number of workout sessions you’re doing per week? Can you exercise at a slightly higher level of intensity? What you did initially might have worked but now your body needs more exercise or less food or both. Unless you’ve a medical problem it all comes down to energy balance between calories consumed versus calories expended. If before you needed 2000 calories, now maybe you can get by with 1600 to 1800 calories.

Getting to the next fitness level - Making a decision to change your program is your only hope to continue making progress. You can’t keep doing the same thing and anticipate different results. For example, what you did in high school is not the same as what you need to do in college.

Lowering your calories might not be the ideal option as your body will need the nutrients from food to keep you healthy. The substitute is to exercise harder, longer or a little of both. Your workouts should build in intensity slowly to avoid injuries. It is also necessary to rest properly between workouts to prevent over training. Monitor what type of foods you eat to get the most out of calories consumed. Eat foods that are nutrient rich. Minimize empty, nutritionally bankrupt foods as much as possible. Keep track of how hard you’re exercising and plan on upgrading accordingly if your weight reaches a plateau.

You are now walking one mile in fifteen minutes instead of twenty minutes. You were only able to do three push-ups at the start and now you can do ten.

This is how you should train for weight loss success. Know what you did three months ago so you can compare to what your are doing today. You are not only reducing your body weight in fat, but you are also creating more lean muscles. The increase in lean muscles will burn more calories even when you’re sleeping. Your family and friends will think you lost a lot more weight that you actually did.

Fast Weight Loss Diet - Nope!

As discussed in my previous articles, which some of you may have read, fast weight loss diets may not be the best choice for a truly long lasting weight loss. Frequently, as I’ve mentioned other times, this just leads to a quick regaining of your weight with possibly more pounds being added to your body. So let’s look at an substitute to fast weight loss diets.

You’re overweight for the most simple of reasons. You are eating the wrong foods. The wrong types of calories are pouring over your tongue to add pounds to your body. You are also using the wrong pattern for eating those meals you do eat.

Food is more powerful than any pill you could take to make you lose weight. Why? Because the food you eat has the power to make you either thin or fat. You do not get fat just due to a lack of exercise. You get fat because you’re eating the wrong foods at the wrong intervals.

The pattern in which you eat your meals is also very powerful in your weight loss or gain. Your body is like an engine and only needs certain foods at intervals everyday and if you don’t eat the right foods at the right times your body will not burn those calories. You’ll end up storing those calories as fat tissue. You have to eat more than 3 times a day to lose weight.

You’ve gotten overweight by eating the wrong foods. You can get thin by eating the right foods in the right intervals.

Low calories diets do not work as long term weight loss diets due to the fact you’re starving your body and your metabolism adjusts. Your body prepares for starvation by entering a starvation mode and stores calories as fat.

Low fat diets definitely do not work as how many of us are eating low fat foods? Hmmm that’s a billion dollar business and our population continues to gain weight daily. The low fat lifestyle simply is not working for us.

Low carb? Let’s see - a very popular diet method but once again a form of the starvation diet. The Adkins diet, for example, has you eating only 20 grams of carbs daily. It takes about 5 months to reach the 100 grams of carbs (400 carb calories) per day. A typical restaurant meal has more carbs than that.

So what do we do? You ask. Let-s look at calorie shifting. Your body’s metabolism does not know how much food you’ll eat tomorrow so it sets its controls based on your last few days. It assumes you are going to eat the same pattern day after day. So we need to shift our diet each few days to fool our system.

We need to stoke our metabolism for a few days then change to a system of eating foods that have easily burned calories for a few days. By doing this your metabolism is high enough to consume those calories plus some of the calories stored in your fat tissue. We then repeat the process to continue fooling our system into consuming our fat tissue. By constantly alternating your menu between each possible type of calorie, constantly shifting from one type of calorie to the next, you will ensure that the scale keeps dropping.

Contouring Your Face With Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury or help relieve some breathing problems.

During your initial consultation, Your plastic surgeon will evaluate your general health. Your surgeon will explain which surgical techniques are the most appropriate based on the structure of your nose and face. He’ll explain the factors that can influence your surgery and the results. These factors include the structure of your nasal bones and cartilage, the shape of your face, the thickness of your skin, your age, and your expectations. You’ll have the chance to view pre and post-op photographs of other patients, be photographed and discuss with pre and post-op care. Your plastic surgeon’s assistant will give you the total fee, which includes the fees of your surgeon, hospital, and anesthesia. You will also be given written pre and post-op care and informed consent to review before signing.

Rhinoplasty usually takes 2-4 hours in the operating room, but the more correction required would increase your surgical time. During your surgery the skin of your nose is separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage, which is then sculpted to the desired shape. Your plastic surgeon will use either an open or closed technique depending on the extent of surgery required. Either surgical procedures leaves very minimal or no scarring on the outside, because work is done from the inside of the nose. When your surgery is finished, a splint will be applied to help your nose maintain its new shape. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints also may be put in your nostrils to stabilize the septum, the dividing wall between the air passages.

After surgery, particularly during the first twenty-four hours - your face will feel puffy, your nose might ache, and you may have a dull headache. You can control any anguish with the pain medication prescribed by your surgeon. Plan on staying in bed with your head elevated (except for going to the lavatory) for the first day.

You’ll notice that the swelling and bruising around your eyes will increase at first, reaching a peak after 2 to 3 days. Applying cold compresses will reduce this swelling and make you feel a bit better. Most of swelling and bruising should disappear within two weeks or so.

You will return to Your plastic surgeon’s office within the first week after surgery. Your first visit will remove any packing you might have, remove the splint from your nose and re-tape the top of the nose and your sutures might be removed at this time. At the end of two weeks, all your dressings will have been removed and you will notice a change in the shape or size of your new nose. You’ll have follow-up visits on a regular basis over the next year. Your plastic surgeon will decide on the frequency of your follow-up care depending on your needs.

Your first meeting with your plastic surgeon will help determine the possibility of surgery. The ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are when you are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way you look. If you’re physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.

Are there scars? Yes. Whenever surgery is performed on your body a scar will result. Rhinoplasty scars are very small and generally not visible. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the placement of incisions during your first visit.

Does it injured? You’ll have plenty of pain medications for discomfort after surgery. Please tell your surgeon of all your drug allergies. Some pain medication might cause nausea this should not be considered an allergy. All pain medication will cause drowsiness and therefore you should not drive yourself and or operate equipment. An antibiotic is used for only a few days after your surgery. Sometimes following surgery to help decrease swelling your surgeon might prescribe Medrol-dose pack.

You should avoid or be off all diet or over the counter weight medications. The only homeopathic medications are those suggested by Your plastic surgeon. It is especially important to be off St. John’s Wort and Ginseng, which can cause adverse effects during anesthesia. Please stop taking all aspirin-like products, Advil, and ibuprofen as these medications can cause bleeding problems.
